TASK#STOMP: Protecting Your Business from Document Theft and Remote Access

How is this happening?

The attack begins with a malicious VBScript that launches hidden PowerShell scripts and creates scheduled tasks to keep the malware running. It disguises its files and tasks as legitimate Windows components and changes file timestamps to make suspicious activity harder to investigate. Once active, the backdoor can automatically upload business documents, capture screenshots, steal clipboard contents and saved Wi-Fi passwords, and execute commands from an attacker. Multiple persistence mechanisms allow it to survive restarts and complicate removal.

What is the weakness?

Attackers abuse tools that IT teams also use legitimately, including PowerShell and Windows Task Scheduler. Individual actions may appear routine, making it important to connect suspicious script execution, system changes, and outbound network activity rather than rely only on known malicious filenames. Removing one script or task may leave other components able to restart the infection.

Users should:

  • Avoid opening unexpected script attachments or running commands provided through unsolicited messages.
  • Report suspicious downloads, unexpected command windows, or security alerts promptly.

i4DM can help strengthen your security layers with:

  • Endpoint detection and response: Assess monitoring for hidden PowerShell activity, suspicious scheduled tasks, and unusual process chains—not just known malware.
  • Script controls and system hardening: Evaluate application-control policies and restrictions on unnecessary scripting while preserving approved business workflows.
  •  Network protection: Review controls for blocking known attacker infrastructure and detecting suspicious outbound connections.
  • Coordinated incident response: Plan for endpoint isolation, evidence preservation, removal of all persistence mechanisms, and verification after reboot. These priorities align with NIST defensive recommendations.

Turn threat intelligence into a practical security plan

Ask i4DM to review which protections are deployed, where coverage gaps remain, and which improvements will take priority. Recommendations should be matched to your environment, business needs, and service scope. Let’s get mission possible together.
