HealthCare Access Maryland (HCAM) connects residents to insurance and care, educates the community about healthier living, and advocates for a more equitable healthcare system. Carrying out their mission requires them to consistently evaluate the effectiveness of their IT security measures while ensuring they are spending their budget wisely.
HCAM requires a robust security protocol designed to safeguard highly sensitive customer data, protect over 200 employees from falling victim to malware, viruses, and cyber threats, and ensure they remain Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant, without fail. Their existing security appliance, which combines advanced firewall and VPN functionality in one device, worked properly; however, the necessary security subscription was becoming exceedingly costly. HCAM tasked i4DM to implement a solution that continued to enable their employees to work from home without the risk of malware, viruses, and cyber threats while complying with all HIPAA regulations.
This challenge was unique because it required a complex and comprehensive solution that involved incredible collaboration and coordination between i4DM and HCAM. i4DM integrated remote access monitoring, a proactive maintenance plan, and ongoing managed IT services while proactively maintaining the following services — email security, antivirus detection and response, web filtering, inventory and patch management, Office 365 and onsite backups, and firewall management.
i4DM delivered a comprehensive solution that continues to be effective today. i4DM replaced the existing security appliance with a comparable but newer system and sourced a security subscription that saves approximately $4,000 per year, strengthened Office 365 security controls through the implementation of 2FA for all employees and Office 365 compliance, installed tools that complied with HIPAA regulations and secured employee laptops with anti-virus and web filtering protection, and increased efficiency in ticket prioritization, reduced recurring IT issues by creating an internal Knowledge Base system that empowers employees to troubleshoot and resolve issues on their own and boosted customer experience with timely responses.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of the automotive industry, cybersecurity has emerged as a critical concern. i4DM’s recent engagement in an Endpoint Detection And Response (EDR) project exemplifies our commitment to enhancing the security of critical systems.
The Security Operations Center (SOC) noticed an application behaving out of the norm during scheduled threat hunting. A user had unwittingly downloaded a malware-laced document, triggering a script execution that attempted to connect to other machines. The next step was to swiftly identify, isolate, and neutralize the threat while minimizing the impact on the network.
As workplaces embrace greater connectivity, anxieties regarding cybersecurity threats to internal systems have intensified. Administrators are focused on intercepting and preventing anomalous cyber activities within the organization’s network as they could impact multiple machines and departments. They are in search of an integrated solution that can promptly intercept identified threats, thwart their propagation, and mitigate potential harm throughout the network.
Prior to the incident, i4DM implemented an EDR solution that integrated with a 24×7 managed Security Operations Center (SOC). Unlike traditional antivirus solutions, EDR goes beyond known threats, leveraging AI and advanced computing to identify unusual activity patterns. Upon detection, the configured EDR software immediately disconnected the affected machine from all network traffic, preventing the malware from spreading.
The configured EDR solution effectively isolated the compromised machine, allowing the SOC to investigate the incident promptly. The user was educated about the incident, and the affected machine was replaced, ensuring a secure network environment. This incident demonstrates the nature of EDR, preventing potential cyber threats from escalating and safeguarding the client’s critical systems. EDR’s approach also works proactively, and this case provided critical insights for further investigation. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates the nation’s largest integrated healthcare network of over 1,100 facilities, providing care to more than 8.9 million Veterans. Although there are numerous facilities available, it is not uncommon for Veterans to travel long distances to reach their closest VA facility. The VA is committed to ensuring that all Veterans have adequate access to healthcare, including through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the Chief Business Office (CBO), and the Veterans Transportation Program (VTP), which reimburses certain eligible individuals for travel costs associated with VA healthcare.
In handling such a large volume of travel claims from across the country, the VA was challenged with intake, organizing, processing, and completing millions of claims annually. With an inefficient system that lacked effective communication methods, many customers were unsatisfied and did not receive reimbursement in a timely manner. The system also created many vulnerabilities, which led to fraudulent claims that inevitably caused delays in processing legitimate claims. Some Veterans were even opting to forego submitting claims with a small dollar amount to avoid the hassle of the process.
The VA sought to improve its travel program to elevate the customer experience, open up new forms of communication between Veterans and the VA, and decrease the turnaround time of travel reimbursements, giving Veterans the financial support they deserve. These program improvements needed to include a new rules engine and approval workflow, which included automatically approving most mileage-only claims and preventing fraudulent claims.
i4DM improved the travel program with a cloud-based self-serve solution. Through integrating a multifaceted and customized SaaS solution, i4DM created a responsive, user-facing portal for Veterans to request reimbursement for travel to VA appointments, a robust rules engine that determined the disposition of reimbursement requests, various source systems with an integration layer, and a cloud implementation.
Through i4DM’s implementation of the cloud-based self-serve solution, Veterans can now submit reimbursement requests on any device and receive reimbursement through electronic funds transfer (EFT) within 1-2 days. The new system also includes an administration interface for travel clerks and VA administrators to review and approve requests. Many mileage-only requests are approved automatically to save money and time, forgoing travel clerk interaction, saving the U.S. government more than $63 million annually.

i4DM launched an intuitive Custom Application initiative that created a Centralized Scheduling System uniting all lines of business. It also developed a user-friendly, web-based application for employees and customers that closely monitored the evolution of the program, ensuring the least amount of downtime.
The statewide agency’s internal strategies were easily executed with all lines of business under two systems. An improved scheduling process reduced customer wait times significantly, and a consistent data process protected the integrity of customer records.
